Autumn rose planting in Ukraine: not the date, but the right moment

The calendar differs across Ukraine: in the north the soil cools earlier than in the south or in Zakarpattia. So we look not only at the date, but also at the plant, the soil and the forecast.

Short answerA bare-root rose is planted once it has entered dormancy, while the soil is still not frozen or waterlogged. A container-grown rose can go in earlier, but not in strong heat.

Guidance by region

These are not fixed dates: in some years the boundary shifts by several weeks.

North, east and higher sites

Usually from late September to October, without waiting for the ground to freeze solid.

Centre and most of the west

The main window usually falls in October and, in a mild autumn, into early November.

South, the coast and warm Zakarpattia

Planting is often possible in late October and in November, as long as the soil can still be worked.

Five checks before planting

  1. The plant. A bare-root plant must be dormant; a container root ball should be moist and intact.
  2. The site after rain. If water stands for long, you need drainage or a raised area.
  3. Width, not 'stuffing'. Spread the roots freely; fresh manure, concentrated fertiliser and gravel at the bottom are not needed.
  4. Rose type. For a grafted rose, check the planting depth with the nursery; own-root roses go in at their previous level.
  5. Watering and marking. The soil must settle around the roots, and mulch must not touch the shoots.
Don't do this

Don't plant into frozen or waterlogged soil, and don't wrap fresh planting airtight while the weather stays warm.

If the plant arrives late

Agree temporary storage or heeling-in with the nursery. The roots must not dry out, but prolonged soaking in water harms them too.

My climate

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
