Hybrid Musks
Hybrid Musks are descendants of the musk rose: instead of solitary flowers, they carry large airy trusses of dozens of small blooms and fill the garden with a light honey-musk fragrance. Their main virtues are exceptional health, shade tolerance (they flower even where others lack sun) and almost continuous flowering until frost. It all began with the rose Trier by the German Peter Lambert (1904); on its basis the English clergyman Pemberton and the Bentall family created the classics of the 1920s–30s, and the modern line was brilliantly continued by the Belgian house Lens.

Companion roses
There are no bad roses. Some have had bad luck with their spot; some have lacked care; others have been paired with the wrong neighbours. That is exactly what stops us from seeing the true beauty of such an unassuming rose.
They are not the stars of the bed — they are the stars' surroundings, the beauties' best friends: varieties that keep the main roses company and make the garden whole. Their beauty is quiet, but without them the garden would be incomplete.

Roses for a shady garden
A shady garden does not rule out roses. Partial shade (about 3 hours of direct sun a day) suits quite a few roses, provided you consider warmth as well as light. The most reliable in shade are Hybrid Musks and some David Austin English roses: they flower even where others lack sun. Remember: in northern and colder regions the choice is narrower than in the south.

Climbing roses for the garden
Climbing roses are the garden's 'exclamation marks': they lift it upward and dress up supports, arches, fences, pergolas and walls. They are divided into ramblers (flexible, small-flowered, often once-flowering) and climbers (stiffer, large-flowered, usually repeat-flowering). For our climate, the essentials are winter hardiness and the ability to take the shoots down from their support for winter protection.

Dark Velvet
Roses that come closest to black — deep burgundy and carmine with a velvety, almost night-like depth. To admire this depth, let the flower show its ink-like shade: plant such varieties in dappled partial shade — morning sun and shade from the midday heat. In open, scorching sun the dark petals scorch at the edges and the colour lightens to an ordinary dark red. These roses are darkest in spring and autumn, in cool weather. Just don't plant them in deep shade — they still need 5–6 hours of sun, otherwise there will be few flowers. The cards are arranged from lightest to darkest.

Roses that need no winter protection
These roses need no winter protection: no spruce branches, no spunbond, no autumn fuss before the frosts. They include the Canadian Explorer and Parkland, bred for the prairies, where winters are harsher than ours; old rugosas and gallicas that have lived in gardens for centuries; and modern shrub roses with a reputation for being unbreakable. One rule still applies to all: in the first year or two, mound soil up around a young bush by 15–20 cm. The roots have not yet gathered strength, and the graft union needs protection. After that they manage on their own. ⚠️ And to be honest: winter hardiness is not the same as disease resistance. Most varieties here are strong on both counts, but some old ones, Zéphirine Drouhin, Reine des Violettes and Morden Centennial, can catch black spot in a wet summer. The main point this selection makes is that a winter-hardy rose is by no means a dull one: here you will find Gertrude Jekyll with its benchmark fragrance, Madame Hardy with its famous green eye, and the violet Reine des Violettes. The cards are arranged by colour, from white and cream through yellow, apricot and pink to red, purple and violet. Each card gives the hardiness right in its caption, so look for what you like and check the temperatures: the toughest here are the Canadian Explorer and rugosa roses, led by William Baffin.

Roses along a fence
Roses along a fence turn a blank fence into a flowering wall. Both climbers (which cover the fence upwards) and tall shrubs, including prickly Rugosas (as a living hedge), are suitable. ⚠️ The main rule: plant no closer than ~1 m to a neighbouring bush — otherwise the plants lack light and air, and get sick more often. ⚠️ If the fence is solid — made of corrugated sheeting or concrete slabs — step back another ~1 m from it: such material blocks light and air, overheats in summer, and in winter the bush freezes where it touches the cold wall. Choose winter-hardy varieties that are easy to take down from their supports for winter protection.
