Black spot in autumn: what to remove and what to treat with

Spots on old leaves can no longer be cured. The autumn aim is to reduce the number of infected debris before the new season.

Short answerCollect diseased fallen leaves, remove clearly infected shoots, water the soil rather than the foliage, and ensure good air circulation. Choose a treatment only when it is needed, permitted in Ukraine for this crop, and used according to the label.

Autumn routine

  1. Don't damage the bush. Collect leaves that come away easily or have already fallen.
  2. Remove the source of infection. Don't leave diseased debris under new mulch.
  3. Mark the bush. In spring it needs an early check and monitoring of new leaves.
  4. Check the conditions. Dense planting, overhead watering and leaves that stay wet for long periods all encourage the problem.

My climate

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
