Yarrow beside roses

Practical compatibility, planting, care and climate limits, without exaggerated promises.

Yarrow
Achillea

Why it makes a good neighbour

Flat flower heads and lacy foliage give a rose bed a light, natural feel and extend colour into the second half of summer.

How to plant it beside a rose

Yarrow likes sun and well-drained, not overly rich soil. Beside a rose, it is best given the drier outer edge of the planting.

1

Give it sun

Do not hide it behind a dense rose bush.

2

Do not plant it too close

Leave room for air and for the mature clump.

3

Water at planting

Once it is rooted in, water only in long droughts.

4

Do not overfeed

Excess fertiliser gives weak shoots that flop over.

For Ukraine and Europe

A short care calendar

Spring

Remove dry stems and divide the clump if needed.

Summer

Deadhead spent flower heads for tidiness and a second flush.

Autumn and winter

You can leave the dry flower heads as winter structure.

Roses in Roza Book's agreed pairings

For yarrow, 4 varieties are shown where this companion already appears in an agreed pairing. The caption repeats the actual colour palette from the rose card.

Harmony and contrastThe selection includes both related transitions and a more pronounced colour contrast.

Growing conditionsBasic conditions: full sun. Leave room for air circulation, and decide the final spacing according to the mature size of the plants.

Why these varietiesEach pairing repeats a scheme already agreed in the rose card; random varieties were not added.

Source for verification

Basic requirements were checked against material from the Royal Horticultural Society. The practical placement beside a rose is worded separately and is not presented as a universal, strict rule.

My climate

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
