How to plant it beside a rose

Catmint and roses combine well in a well-drained border. Once rooted, catmint tolerates dryness better, so do not keep it in constantly wet soil.

1

Leave room for air

Do not let catmint cover the base of the rose; plan for the mature width of the chosen variety.

2

Provide drainage

Plant it in soil where water does not pool after rain or snowmelt.

3

Water at the start

Keep moisture moderate until it has rooted, then water only when needed.

4

Cut back after the first flush

After the main flowering, shorten the shoots so the plant stays tidier and can flower again.

For Ukraine and Europe

Short care calendar

Spring

Remove dry shoots from last year and divide the old clump if needed.

Summer

After the first flush, cut back spent shoots; water during a long drought.

Autumn and winter

Do not leave it in a waterlogged spot; special feeding is usually not needed.

Roses in Roza Book's agreed pairings

For catmint (Nepeta) we show 4 varieties where this companion is already part of an agreed pairing. The caption repeats the actual palette from the rose card.

Harmony and contrastThe selection includes both related colour transitions and sharper colour contrast.

Growing conditionsBasic conditions: sun, light partial shade. Leave room for air circulation, and set the final spacing according to the mature size of the plants.

Why these varietiesEach pair repeats a scheme already agreed in the rose card; random varieties were not added.

Source for verification

Basic requirements were checked against materials from the Royal Horticultural Society. The practical placement beside a rose is worded separately and is not presented as a universal, strict rule.

My climate

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
