How to grow

Where to plant. Near places for evening relaxation — terraces, patios, bedroom windows (peak fragrance in the evening!); arches, pergolas, south-facing walls; ideal as a duet with Lawinia — 'two pink climbers, Tantau + Kordes'.

Climate. Down to −25 °C — 'exceptionally winter-hardy' (Kordes); in Ukraine, no winter protection in most regions.

Care. Minimal — prune in summer (after the first flush); tie in horizontally for more flowers; needs almost no disease prevention (ADR-certificate).

About the name

Name. 'Laguna' — a sea lagoon; a marketing association with freshness and resorts. The name emphasises the fresh lemony-citrus character of the scent — like a 'breeze from the sea'.

Breeding. Bred by Tim-Hermann Kordes at W. Kordes' Söhne (Sparrieshoop, Germany); bred in 1994, market release in Germany 2004, in the USA 2008. Code KORadigel. Internal code KO 94/2394-01. US PP 16,936. Parentage: (La Sevillana × Sympathie) × unknown seedling. It belongs to the Climbing Max / Arborose collection — the flagship line of fragrant climbers from Kordes in the 2000s.

Significance. ADR 2007 (Germany) — the German benchmark for resistance and quality. Also: Gold Medal Geneva, Gold Medal Glasgow and other European trials. One of the most fragrant and healthiest modern climbers from Kordes — a rare combination of 5/5 fragrance + 4.5/5 health + ADR in one variety. The flagship of the Climbing Max collection. The 5th Tim-Hermann Kordes variety in our catalogue — alongside Florentina (2011), Kordes Jubilee (2012), Larissa (1998/2008), Landlust (2002/2015). Tim-Hermann is the 4th generation of the Kordes house (1887 – Wilhelm II – Reimer – Tim-Hermann). Do not confuse with the historic variety 'Laguna' (Tantau, a different year) — KORadigel is the official one.
