How to grow

Where to plant. In a border, at the front of a flower bed, or in a container. Cream-yellow reads best against dark green or near blue-violet perennials.

Climate. Roughly USDA zone 6 (−20…−23 °C); in colder parts of Ukraine it overwinters with the base covered.

Care. A sunny, well-ventilated spot; fertile, well-drained soil; spring pruning by ⅓–½; regular removal of spent flower clusters for continuous flowering.

About the name

Name. 'Miss Fine', an English trade name (roughly 'Miss Refined' or 'Miss Exquisite'), echoing the delicate cream-yellow look of the flower. No official explanation has been found for whom it is named.

Breeding. Bred by Ann Velle-Boudolf at the Lens Roses nursery (Oudenburg, Belgium); introduced in 2011; code VEL11trpoa. Ann and her husband Rudy Velle bought the historic nursery Louis Lens (founded 1870) in 1991–1992. The house is known worldwide for the white hybrid tea 'Pascali' and the Hybrid Musks 'Guirlande d'Amour' and 'Plaisanterie'.

Significance. A model of the Lens Belgian school, a healthy, undemanding garden rose with a natural 'old-fashioned' charm. The large peony-shaped flower and high disease resistance make Miss Fine a reliable yet striking choice for a border.
