About the name
Name. 'Brothers Grimm' — the trade name in English-speaking markets and the main name used in our handbook. The original German registration name is 'Gebrüder Grimm'. The variety is dedicated to Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm (1786–1859) Grimm, German philologists and collectors of folk tales, whose book 'Children's and Household Tales' (1812) became one of the most influential works in world literature. In France the variety is sold as Joli Tambour.
Breeding. Bred by W. Kordes' Söhne, Sparrieshoop, Germany, 2002. Code KORassenet. It belongs to the special MärchenRosen® collection (Kordes' 'Fairy Tale Roses'), in which each variety is dedicated to a literary or fairy-tale character or author. Parentage not disclosed.
Significance. One of the best-known ADR-listed varieties of the early 2000s: ADR 2002 — the main quality mark for German garden roses (4 years of independent testing); BUGA Gold Potsdam 2001 — gold at Germany's federal garden show; Silver Kortrijk (Belgium); Bronze Rome (Italy). This makes it a model example of a modern, dependable bedding rose for Europe. It is often used in public German rose gardens and parks as the 'workhorse' of sunny borders.
