How to grow

Where to plant. An upright, spreading shrub, 120–150 × about 120 cm, which needs no support: a self-supporting bush for a single specimen, a group or a mixed border. The dark red velvety flowers look good against blue-violet and silver perennials.

Climate. USDA 5b–10b (RHS H6, roughly −20…−15 °C). Overwinters well and needs only light protection: suitable for most regions of Ukraine.

Care. Repeat-flowering, in waves through summer and autumn; the blooms last a long time. Very good disease resistance (above average against leaf spot and botrytis) makes care easier.

About the name

Name. 'Isabel', part of Poulsen's 'Renaissance Collection': a series of nostalgic shrub roses named after women. Synonyms: Isabella and Isabelle Renaissance.

Breeding. Bred by the Danish breeders Pernille and Mogens Olesen at Poulsen Roser (Denmark). Bred 1991, introduced 1998. Breeding code POUlisab. Parentage: seedling × Jazz. Patent PP12825 (also patents in Australia, Canada and the USA).

Significance. A nostalgic-type shrub in the Renaissance series: a modern rose with the character of an 'old' flower. It holds no official awards (AARS/ADR/AGM), only patent protection. Its main strengths are the stable dark red velvety colour, the large semi-double flower that opens wide with golden stamens, very good disease resistance, and a self-supporting habit that needs no support.
