How to grow

Where to plant. A vigorous, upright, spreading Hybrid Tea 1–1.8 m tall; good as a specimen, in a group of dark red varieties, or at the back of a bed, where its large velvety flowers can be seen from afar. It needs no support. Sunny spot, fertile soil.

Climate. USDA 6b and warmer (about −20…−23 °C). In Ukraine, cover for winter, especially in the Forest-Steppe and further north.

Care. Very high disease resistance (ADR mark) makes this variety easy to grow. Repeat flowering in waves throughout the season — refreshing removal of spent blooms keeps new waves coming.

About the name

Name. «Liebeszauber» means «love's magic» or «love's spell» in German (Liebe — love, Zauber — magic). The English synonym Love's Magic conveys the same meaning.

Breeding. Raised at W. Kordes' Söhne (Germany), introduced in 1990/1991. Breeding code KORmiach. In different countries the variety was sold under different names: City of Windsor (UK) and Crimson Spire.

Significance. A dark red velvety Hybrid Tea with the ADR mark (year of award not confirmed) — the German award for overall garden value and very high disease resistance. Also awarded a prize for fragrance at the Hague competition in 1994. The combination of deep crimson, strong classic rose scent and reliable health places Liebeszauber alongside classic dark red Hybrid Teas such as Papa Meilland, Mister Lincoln, Deep Secret and Barkarole.
