How to grow

Where to plant. For a pergola, arch, tall trellis or wall. A dramatic focal accent in the garden — the bicolour catches the eye from afar.

Climate. Suits almost all of Ukraine; ideal in the centre and south. In the north — with light winter cover.

Care. Tie in horizontal shoots to maximise flowering of the side shoots, prune weak shoots in spring, mulch the roots in summer.

About the name

Name. 'Bajazzo' — from the Italian Pagliaccio ('clown'), the hero of Leoncavallo's famous opera (1892). An allusion to the bright two-coloured 'costume' of the flower.

Breeding. Bred by Tim Hermann Kordes in 2001 (working code KO 01/1529-01). The parentage is not officially published. Patent code: KORteheba; US patent PP 24,548 (2014).

Meaning. Drama, contrast, theatricality — the combination of a silvery reverse with a saturated front makes the variety easy to recognise among climbers.

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
