How to grow

Where to plant. For an arch, pergola, pillar or obelisk, or against a wall on a trellis — the quartered 'porcelain' flowers create a romantic, nostalgic accent; pairs beautifully with clematis.

Climate. Centre and south of Ukraine — good; in the north — with the base covered (USDA zone 6).

Care. For the first 2–3 years train it as a climber — tie shoots in horizontally; in spring remove weak canes and feed twice. Very healthy — minimal spraying.

About the name

Name. Tantau has given no official explanation; 'Giardina' sounds like the Italian giardino, 'garden', which suits a garden climbing rose. In France the variety is sold under a different name, 'L'Alhambra' (after the Alhambra palace).

Breeding. Rosen Tantau (Germany), breeder Hans Jürgen Evers. Bred in 1997, introduced in 2008. Patent code TAN97289.

Significance. One of the last works of Hans Jürgen Evers (1940–2007), the chief breeder at Tantau. Awarded bronze at Baden-Baden (2007), a prize in Lyon (2008) and bronze in Tokyo.

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
