How to grow

Where to plant. At the front of a border, in a container, in small groups of 3–5 bushes — its compact 40–60 cm size makes this possible.

Climate. USDA 6b–9b, heat-loving and heat-tolerant; in colder parts of Ukraine it overwinters with the base covered.

Care. Full sun, ≥6 hours; rich, well-drained soil; keep repeat flowering going by deadheading spent clusters; because its resistance to spotting is moderate (3/5), ensure good air circulation and preventive care.

About the name

Name. 'Goldelse' = 'Golden Else' (Else is a diminutive of Elisabeth). This is the popular Berlin nickname for the golden statue of Victoria on the Victory Column (Siegessäule) in Berlin. Tantau played on this 'golden' image in the name of the amber-gold rose.

Breeding. Bred by Hans Jürgen Evers at the house of Rosen Tantau (Germany, founded 1906, Uetersen), introduced in 1999, code TANdolgnil. Synonyms in various markets: Bowled Over, Barley Gold, Golden Fancy.

Significance. Gold Medal, Internationale Rosenneuheiten Baden-Baden 1997. A compact bedding rose with a rare 'glowing' golden-amber colour and a nostalgic form — a bright accent for small spaces and front-of-border positions.
