How to grow

Where to plant. A formal flower bed, a border, a rose garden, a terrace container; excellent for cutting — a striped flower in a bouquet catches the eye at once. It is better against a plain green background, without other busy neighbours nearby.

Climate. Withstands frosts to about −20 °C, USDA 6–9. It overwinters well in the Forest-Steppe and Steppe; in northern regions — with light cover.

Care. Spring formative pruning to 3–5 buds, removing spent flowers for repeat flowering, prevention of black spot in wet summers.

About the name

Name. The variety is named after the French painter Maurice Utrillo (1883–1955), a master of the Montmartre landscapes of Paris. It is part of the Delbard 'Les Roses des Peintres' ('Roses of the Painters') collection, in which striped, 'brushstroke' varieties are dedicated to famous painters.

Breeding. Bred by the French nursery Georges Delbard and introduced around 2004. Breeding code DELstavo. Belongs to the Hybrid Tea group.

Significance. One of the most distinctive striped varieties of the 'Artists' series — it combines a large classic Hybrid Tea bloom with a picturesque red, white and yellow pattern where no two flowers are the same.
