How to grow

Where to plant. Beside a post, arch, fence or trellis. Altissimo needs support and shows its best in a vertical position. It tolerates full sun and light shade, so it suits even the less sunny spots in the garden.

Climate. USDA zone 5b and warmer (≈ −23…−26 °C), quite hardy for a climber. In Ukraine it is worth covering the base of the bush for winter.

Care. Train the canes onto the support as they grow, and remove old and damaged canes in spring. Its good natural resistance to black spot and powdery mildew reduces the need for treatments.

About the name

Name. ‘Altissimo’ is Italian for ‘highest’, a hint at the variety's ability to climb up its support.

Breeding. Bred by André Delbard-Chabert (France) in 1966, code DELmur, from a cross of Ténor with an unknown seedling.

Meaning. Altissimo is one of the best-known single red climbing roses. Its large, flat blood-red flower with golden stamens looks striking on a wall or arch, and it remains a classic of garden design.
