How to combine Antike ’89 in the garden

Antike ’89 is a vigorous climber with large cream-pink flowers and a carmine edge. A neighbouring variety should either lighten the composition or add one cool contrast.

An echo of the two-tone theme

Handel repeats the cream-pink idea in a lighter bloom. If you choose this direction, each climber needs its own section of support.

Soft pink transition

Choose a pearl-pink tall backdrop or a lighter pink-white lower tier, depending on the space you have and the height you need.

Cool depth

One lavender-lilac bush at the base of the support separates the carmine edge and does not create a dark patch.

Companion perennials

Companions are spaced by microzone: a sunny edge, a shaded edge and a separate patch by the support.

  • Clematis 'Jackmanii'. Purple flowers contrast with the carmine edge; keep the roots apart and leave a separate place on the support.
  • Geranium 'Wargrave Pink'. A low geranium covers the front edge and supports the pink edging; do not plant it right up to the root collar.
  • Lavender. Suitable only on a sunny, drier edge of the composition, where its purple spikes highlight the two-tone rose.
  • Blue-leaved hosta. Can grow on the shaded outer side of the support, rather than in the same conditions as the rose; its blue-grey leaves lighten the base.

What to avoid

Do not overload one support with several vigorous climbers, and do not add a heavy dark maroon variety nearby: Antike ’89 needs space and a light setting.

How to grow

Where to plant. Beside a sturdy arch, pergola, wall or trellis. The stiff, long canes should be gradually spread out and tied in. Conditions: a sunny or lightly shaded, airy spot; leave space around the wall for air to circulate. Winter in Ukraine: in the south and in sheltered spots, carefully earth up the base; in central, northern and eastern regions, additionally protect the long canes on the support. Do not try to force the stiff canes down to the ground.
