About the name
Name. 'Engagement' — English for 'engagement' (betrothal). The name reflects the tender coral-pink character of the flower, traditionally associated with engagements.
Breeding. Bred by John W. Patterson in the USA, 1969. Parentage has not been officially published in accessible sources. This variety has no page on HelpMeFind — the information comes mainly from Russian- and Ukrainian-language nursery databases (rosebook.ru, rosecatalog.ru, decorexpro). This lowers confidence in the details, but the variety remains popular in post-Soviet collections.
Significance. One of the classic bedding hybrid teas of the late 1960s. Important for this handbook: the name 'Engagement' is also used for a popular modern Ecuadorian cut rose — that is a different variety. In the post-Soviet area, 'Anhazhement' traditionally refers specifically to the historic Patterson 1969.
