How to grow

Where to plant. In a bed, a border, a white flower garden, a low hedge, or containers; the 'two-tone' effect of warm buds and white flowers looks good in mass plantings.

Climate. South and centre of Ukraine, without protection; in the north, with winter protection (USDA zone ~6).

Care. Minimal, an ADR-variety and healthy; full sun or light partial shade, fertile soil; self-cleaning, so removing spent flowers is not essential.

About the name

Name. Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky (α Canis Majoris, the 'Dog Star'); the brilliant whiteness of the fully open flower echoes that bright white star.

Breeding. Bred by Hans-Jürgen Evers for Rosen-Tantau (Germany) in 2005, on sale since 2013. Patent code: TAN05415. Parent forms not published.

Significance. A German ADR-rose of 2013 and a repeat prize-winner at international competitions (gold at The Hague and Glasgow 2016, best floribunda at Hradec Králové 2015, and others). From 2017 the same variety has been sold under the name 'Martin Luther Rose', for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, referring to Martin Luther's heraldic white rose.
