How to combine Anna’s Promise in the garden

Anna’s Promise combines pink, copper and golden shades in one large flower. It is best to choose a neighbouring rose according to which part of this complex palette you want to emphasise.

Warm echo

Choose a lighter mustard-gold or a deeper chocolate-orange tone. These are two different ways to support the copper palette; you do not have to use both.

Cool smoky depth

A lavender-copper transition cools the warm palette and creates a calmer middle ground.

Light foreground

A lower, rounded bush with small light-pink sprays softens the composition and differs from the flower in scale.

Companion perennials

The companions are chosen for sun and well-drained soil; the tall miscanthus is set back from the base of the bush.

  • Perovskia. A light blue vertical cools the copper-gold palette; plant it on a sunny, well-drained edge.
  • Miscanthus. Narrow leaves and autumn plumes give a textured backdrop; leave enough space so the grass does not shade the rose.
  • Gaillardia. Yellow-red flower heads support the warm palette but have a simple form; they need sun and drainage.
  • Lamb’s ear. Silvery leaves lighten the bronze tones and form a low edge; do not plant where water stands.

What to avoid

Do not group several large two-tone roses with the same pink-copper blends nearby: the bed will look busy, and the pattern of Anna’s Promise will lose its clarity.

How to grow

Where to plant. In a formal flower bed, on a prominent accent spot, or in a cut-flower bed. Long, sturdy stems suit bouquets. Conditions: full sun, fertile well-drained soil, and regular deep watering without waterlogging. Winter in Ukraine: as a guide, USDA zone 6, meaning an average annual extreme minimum of about −23 to −18 °C. This is not a guarantee for a particularly harsh winter. In the south and in sheltered spots, always protect the base of a young bush; in central, northern and eastern regions a more reliable cover is needed, taking the site's microclimate into account.

My climate

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
