How to grow

Where to plant. Fragrant beds beside paths and windows, formal borders, roses for cutting. Because of its strong scent — where people often walk past.

Climate. To −20 °C — winter protection is essential in the northern regions of Ukraine; the southern regions — no cover needed.

Care. Formative pruning in spring, removal of spent flowers; a well-ventilated site helps prevent disease. Regular feeding keeps the flowering abundant all season.

About the name

Name. 'Candlelight' — meaning 'light of a candle'; it conveys the warm golden-amber tone of the flower, which recalls the colour of fire in a dim room.

Breeding. Bred by Hans Jürgen Evers (1940–2007) at Rosen-Tantau (Germany), 1994; released commercially in 2002. Patent code TAN94488 (RT 94-488). Parentage not disclosed by the breeder. Trade synonyms: Bataclan®, Global Beauty, Les Années Folles.

Significance. One of Evers's key varieties in the Nostalgic Hybrid Tea series — the line that brought back fashion for very double, nostalgic forms in the Hybrid Tea class. HMF rating EXCELLENT; Australian Plant Breeder's Rights (2005/304). One of the most fragrant modern HTs — a true 'perfume rose'.

My climate

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
