About the name
Name. 'Kronenbourg' — named after the French brewery Kronenbourg (Strasbourg, Alsace, founded 1664), a marketing name for continental Europe. 'Flaming Peace' — literally 'flaming Peace'; for the British market it points to a bicolour 'fiery' sport of the classic Peace. This is one variety under two trade names depending on the country.
Breeding. MAJOR CORRECTION: the breeder is Sam McGredy IV (McGredy Roses, Northern Ireland / New Zealand) — he discovered the sport and introduced it to cultivation. NOT Meilland, as is often confused (Meilland is the breeder of the seed parent, Peace). The sport was found in 1959; introduction — 1963 in Great Britain as Flaming Peace, 1965 on the continent as Kronenbourg (under a Meilland licence). Code MACbo (prefix MAC = McGredy). A natural bud sport of the variety 'Peace' / 'Mme A. Meilland' (Francis Meilland 1935/1945, WFRS HoF 1976) — there is no deliberate cross; it is a mutation.
Significance. One of the best-known sports of Peace in the world. No official major awards (AARS/ADR/AGM) — overshadowed by the fame of its parent, Peace. Our second rose from the Peace family in the catalogue, alongside Chicago Peace (Johnston 1962, also a sport). Other known sports of Peace: Speelwark, Climbing Peace (a climbing form, MEIcsa 1950 — a separate variety), Pink Peace (1959 — already an independent Meilland cross, not a sport). Often wrongly classified as a Grandiflora — it is an HT. Often confused with Chicago Peace — another sport of Peace, with a different colour.
