How to grow

Where to plant. An open, well-ventilated and sunny spot — full sun. The vigorous bush suits groups and hedges; its very thorny canes also make it suitable for protective plantings.

Climate. Its hardiness matches RHS H6 (≈ −15…−20 °C); in Ukraine light winter protection is advisable.

Care. As it is prone to powdery mildew, make sure there is good ventilation and carry out preventive sprays. Prune with care — the variety is very thorny.

About the name

Name. 'Frensham' — the name of a locality in Britain.

Breeding. Bred by Albert Norman — an amateur breeder who was a diamond cutter by trade (UK); raised in 1942, introduced in 1946.

Significance. 'Frensham' is a historic rose, one of the first true bright red floribundas, awarded the RNRS Gold Medal in 1943. The same breeder raised the well-known 'Ena Harkness'.

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.

Regional data are generalised. USDA describes average annual extreme minima, not a forecast; the values in the list are rounded. Check the conditions at your site. More information: Roses in Ukraine's climate.
