How to grow

Where to plant. Formal borders, mixed borders with apricot and cream neighbours, containers on a terrace; a classic duo — Just Joey + Fragrant Cloud (father and daughter, both in the WFRS Hall of Fame).

Climate. To −18 °C — in Ukraine needs moderate winter protection; the south and centre — no protection in mild winters.

Care. Classic HT — spring pruning to 3–5 buds; removing spent blooms encourages new flushes; seasonal disease prevention to keep the foliage healthy.

About the name

Name. The rose is named after Joey Pawsey — the wife of the breeder Roger Pawsey. 'Just Joey' was her family nickname (literally 'just Joey'). This is a rare example of a rose named not for a public figure but for a close relative of the breeder — and it is this 'private' rose that entered the Hall of Fame.

Breeding. Bred by Roger Pawsey at the Cants of Colchester nursery (Great Britain), introduced in 1972. Code CANjujo. Parentage: Fragrant Cloud × Dr. A.J. Verhage — the father, Fragrant Cloud (Tantau 1963, WFRS HoF 1981), gave a strong fruity scent; the mother, Dr. A.J. Verhage, gave a warm apricot-golden tone. Cants of Colchester is the oldest commercial nursery in Britain, founded in 1765; Just Joey is its best-known variety in over 250 years of history.

Significance. WFRS World's Favourite Rose Hall of Fame 1994 — the highest award in the rose world, given every 3 years by decision of the World Federation of Rose Societies. The seventh Hall of Fame rose in our catalogue — alongside Fragrant Cloud (1981, the father of Just Joey!), Friesia, Iceberg, Double Delight, Graham Thomas (2009), Heidetraum (2022). Also: James Mason Memorial Medal 1986 (RNRS); RNRS Gold Medal 1986; RHS Award of Garden Merit 1993. A benchmark of apricot colour in HTs. The WFRS HoF year is exactly 1994, not 1972 (the year the variety was released), as is sometimes confused. The breeder is Roger Pawsey (a person), not 'Cants' (the nursery).

Choose a reference temperature to compare with the cultivar’s data. This is not an overwintering forecast or advice on winter protection; consider wind, moisture and the duration of frost.
