How to combine Apache in the garden

Apache has a clear, bright red colour and an open, star-shaped flower. It reads best beside a light background or one cool accent.

Light contrast

Choose large pearl-white flowers for a clear contrast, or airy white-pink sprays for a softer transition.

Cool depth

A lilac-purple tone balances the clear red and adds depth without repeating the form of Apache.

A restrained dark echo

One slender dark red variety can deepen the palette, if a light gap is left between the bushes.

Companion perennials

Verticals and flat flower heads add rhythm; all partners need sun, but the tall grass is kept back from the bush.

  • Feather reed grass 'Karl Foerster'. Slender verticals form a backdrop; plant the grass with plenty of space so it does not take light and water.
  • Yarrow 'Paprika'. Flat, warm flower heads support the red but give a different shape; a sunny, well-drained edge suits it.
  • Salvia 'Caradonna'. Purple spikes create a cool contrast and rhythm; they need sun, air and drainage.
  • Lavender. Blue-grey foliage and purple spikes lighten the red mass; place it on the drier edge of the planting.

What to avoid

Do not create a solid mass of several red and dark red varieties around Apache: the individual silhouettes will merge and the light form of the flower will be lost.

How to grow

Where to plant. In drifts, at the front of a wide border, or on a slope where the low, spreading habit shows well. Conditions: sun, air circulation and well-drained soil. Even a resistant variety needs watering during prolonged drought. Winter in Ukraine: in the south and in a sheltered spot, protect the base of a young bush; in central, northern and eastern regions, add a breathable cover after a sustained cold spell.

About the name

Apache is a Kordes landscape variety with the registration name KORcatemp, bred around 2000 and introduced in 2009. The parentage has not been disclosed by the breeder. The breeder does not explain the meaning of the trade name, so we do not attribute an invented symbolism to it. The variety received the Goldene Rose at Baden-Baden in 2009, and at Adelaide in 2013 a bronze medal and the Irwin Award for tolerance of pests and diseases.
