How to grow

Where to plant. Pots, balconies and terraces are the main use; the front edge of low borders; patio arrangements in sunny spots. Not for large plantings: the miniature size gets lost in large beds.

Climate. Weak hardiness; in Central and Eastern Ukraine it usually overwinters in a pot indoors or in a cellar (about +5 °C). In southern Ukraine it can be covered in open ground.

Care. Full sun; a well-ventilated site; needs regular disease prevention against black spot; feed 3 times per season (slow-release fertiliser, specific to containers); prune one half after each flush of bloom; water often, but without waterlogging.

About the name

Name. 'Orange Babyflor', combining 'orange' (a colour description) and 'babyflor' (a small 'baby flower'). Part of the Tantau 'Babyflor' series of miniature patio roses with colour prefixes (Pink Babyflor, White Babyflor, etc.). 'Orange Baby' is the everyday short form, often used by Ukrainian nurseries and catalogues.

Breeding. Bred at Rosen Tantau (Uetersen, Germany), one of the largest European rose houses (founded 1906). Introduced 1994. Tantau's code is not publicly released. Parentage is not published (typical practice of Tantau for miniatures). The Babyflor series is a line of patio and miniature varieties aimed at container culture and the mass market.

Significance. A classic miniature patio rose from Tantau, popular in European pot markets. Unique use: container culture, for those who have no garden but have a balcony or terrace. No official awards (AARS and ADR not given). Weaker disease resistance than modern ADR-rated varieties, so it needs more attention. Weak hardiness: not for open ground in Central and Eastern Ukraine without protection.
