About the name
Name. "Gruss an Teplitz" = "Greetings from Teplitz" (German). Named after the Czech town of Teplitz (German Teplitz, modern spelling Teplice), a spa town in north-western Czechia known for its hot springs since Roman times. A poetic dedication to a beloved spa town, typical of the nineteenth-century Central European botanical tradition.
Breeding. Bred by Rudolf Geschwind (1829-1910), Austria-Hungary (he worked in what is now Slovakia — Krupina). Introduced in 1897. Introduced by Peter Lambert (Germany). Parentage: [('Sir Joseph Paxton' × 'Fellemberg') × 'Papa Gontier'] × 'Gloire des Rosomanes'. Geschwind is one of the most underrated breeders of the nineteenth century, the creator of dozens of varieties for the continental climate of Austria-Hungary. Most of his work has been lost to history; Gruss an Teplitz is one of the few that reached mass popularity.
Significance. WFRS OLD ROSE HALL OF FAME 2000. One of the few varieties by Rudolf Geschwind that reached mass popularity. Bred specifically for the continental climate of Austria-Hungary — Geschwind aimed at cold winters and hot summers, which makes the variety ideal for Ukraine. Strong spicy, peppery scent — one of the most characteristic scents of old varieties. Hybrid China class: often wrongly classified as a Bourbon, a common error in older sources. Repeat flowering is a rare quality for 1897. A Czech cultural dedication, ideal for gardens with a Central European historical theme. 129 years in cultivation without a break.
